Nitro Games have joined the Sustainable Games Alliance (SGA), a non-profit organisation created by game leaders and environmental researchers to help pave the way for environmental and social responsibility and action in our growing industry.
Created this year by Maria Wagner, Dr Benjamin Abraham, and Jiri Kupiainen, the SGA works with game companies to create an industry-wide benchmark for research, and to help build actionable goals for studios.
Its formation coincides with new EU Legislation, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) which requires all large companies to report sustainability reporting. The mandatory requirement is only the latest step in a global effort to ensure that companies, and their industries, are more aware of their global impact, with similar procedures being brought in for the US and New Zealand. It’s through the introductions and tighter measures that kindled the interest and need for the SGA; as a researcher, resource, and in accountability.
Just prior to the signing, SGA sat down with our CEO, Jussi Tähtinen to talk about the reasons he wanted Nitro to be a member company, “Doing the right thing in a way that makes a difference isn’t easy, so we wanted to be a part of this, to learn and understand what actually makes an impact and what doesn’t, and then steer our direction towards that.”
He continues, “In my book, the games industry has been an industry that has been driving technology culture at the workplace; many positive things the gaming industry has been driving forward. So, I see this as a logical next thing, and hopefully we can inspire other Industries as well with our example we’ve had different type of takes towards sustainability and overall caring about the environment. Whenever we support anything in that direction, big or small, we instantly get a lot of positive feedback that has encouraged us to push more in that direction”
